Hard Drive 13 in the Georgia Straight!

Hard Drive 13 has got a write-up in a tiny blurb in the Georgia Straight here. Denyc appears in all her glory at the top of the article, which also mentions several other web series also shot in Vancouver. The Straight called me about a month ago, and after sending them large files and answering a bunch of questions, they finally posted the article! Hopefully, this is just the beginning of wild fame and glory. Certainly our hard-working cast and crew deserve it. BTW, I don’t agree with what the Straight said about the acting. Creator’s Blog: Episode Two – Almost Here

I almost wrote another “Curse of 13″ post, but it’s starting to sound like I have some kind of persecution complex. It’s almost like the gremlins have become old friends; if things are going smoothly, something’s about to go horribly wrong, and when it does, it’s almost a relief; “looks like we’ve had our glitch for this mission…”. The episode is almost ready, but not quite. I still have to finish the mix and the final color correction. So it’ll be done in the morning, Pacific Daylight Time. Curse of 13/Creator’s Blog- My Health

Things in the last while have been crazy and difficult for me. There’s been equipment failures, crashes, and other troubles (see the Curse of 13 posts). But probably the worst obstacle is that I somehow contracted whooping cough, accompanied by pneumonia. As a result, right when I need to be very focussed and energetic to drive the premiere of Hard Drive 13, I’ve had barely enough energy to complete the editing. Creator’s Blog – Production Day 1

First day of production, and it’s always like this. I’m tired, I’m not prepared, and there’s a lot of stuff that needs attention. I didn’t slept last night. Not only that, but I have an editing gig that went long, and now there’s about four days of work to do while we’re shooting. I thought to myself, well, last summer I survived five days of shooting with less than three hours’ sleep each night; this is only four. Piece of cake. Well, okay, not exactly a piece of cake, but at least I’ve done this before.

May 7 came – We were four days away from principal photography. And we really were not ready. A thousand little details to attend to, so many deals to be made, arrangements to arrange, people to book, props to find… Did I say a thousand details? [snort of derision]. Ten thousand, easy. But still I was very jazzed. I believed we had a tiger by the tail, and although right then it felt like I was pushing a boulder up a hill, we were nearing the crest when the boulder starts chasing me. Did I say one boulder? Ten boulders.

Creator’s Blog – Reboot

Version 2.0 is a go. It was April 28 and finally, we’re a go! Seriously, a go. We were shooting five episodes in the beginning of May, and I was working long hours to prepare for it. We had almost no budget, but that didn’t stop us. We were going to hit this thing square between the eyes, hard, and what you’re going to see will amaze you.

Creator’s Blog – Recession

After shooting Version 1.0, I got married, and we went to Santorini, Greece for our honeymoon. What a lovely trip! We came back relaxed and ready to face life together, and then the bottom fell out of my business. I had almost no work, and scary little income. Not good for a marriage in the early stages. Shooting Hard Drive 13 became impossible. It was frustrating.

Creator’s Blog – Fiasco

Last summer, in July 2009, we got a group of people together to try and shoot four episodes of the script. We spent 5 nights and a small amount of money, plus a lot of aggravation trying to get it all in the camera. And every thing went horribly wrong.

This is not the first time Hard Drive 13 has gone before the cameras. And it’s certainly not the first attempt at a script. I’ve got a whole archive of the story as a feature film, as a trilogy of feature films, as a television series, and several incarnations as a web series. I even tried writing it as a novel. But nothing seemed right. The real story seemed like this impregnable mass; an ideological labyrinth with no clear path through. All these intersecting threads… It’s always been that way when you start digging and researching. You start finding things…

Is Hard Drive 13 true? Is it real? The idea for this project didn’t come out of thin air. It came out of a lot of research, out of looking at BBSs and the UseNet and meeting with some very strange people with convincing-sounding views on a lot of things. Most of them were crackpots, true, but enough had a handle on something… something very hard to describe. The world is a very strange place. And conventional wisdom isn’t adequate to explain it. Common Knowledge is Deception.
