Is Hard Drive 13 true? Is it real?

The idea for this project didn’t come out of thin air. It came out of a lot of research, out of looking at BBSs and the UseNet and meeting with some very strange people with convincing-sounding views on a lot of things. Most of them were crackpots, true, but enough had a handle on something… something very hard to describe. The world is a very strange place. And conventional wisdom isn’t adequate to explain it.

Common Knowledge is Deception.

In fact, the more I looked at what most people regard as Common Knowledge, the more I discovered how false it was. How most things we take for granted are at best, poorly understood, and at worst, carefully crafted deception. Anything you read in the papers has a high likelihood of (to be diplomatic) a significant slant. It’s best to mistrust everything you read or hear, and exhaustively research it to find the truth, if it’s possible to know the truth.

So many things I rejected as too outlandish, too crazy. So many of them I’ve seen incontrovertible evidence for. But so much out there sounds plausible, sounds real, but isn’t.

Is Hard Drive 13 fiction?

It depends how you look at it. Hard Drive 13 is fictionalized. Certainly, this is not a documentary in the strictest sense. But as we’ve experienced in the researching and the making of this, it’s far from fiction. There’s a lot beneath what we’re portraying. There are people out there who have seen things, who have done things, who know things that are so unusual, so incredible, that if we just interviewed them and put them on the screen, it would seem insane out of the context of a much larger conversation than we can show you. And telling their story on camera might actually be dangerous to them.

So we fictionalize it. We tell the story in a way that is safe for the real players, is concise to fit in a webisode, and still carries the information in a package that’s fun and watchable.
